  30. RUSSIA, SES PREPARE FOR LAUNCH
  31.   BAKINOUR, Kazakhstan (TS) -- Russia will enter the commercial launch 
  32. business this week with the launch of the new Astra 1F satellite on 
  33. Monday evening. The launch window extends from 2309 to 2319 UTC on 
  34. Monday which is 1909 to 1919 EDT in the United States.
  35.   Astra 1F will join the current Astra satellites to become the sixth 
  36. craft stationed around 19.2 degrees East and provide a range of 
  37. digital television to audiences across Europe.
  38.   Launch coverage is planned from 2230 UTC, 1830 EDT, and current 
  39. satellite coordinates are :
  40.   - Intelsat K, 11.4985 GHz
  41.   - Galaxy 6, ch 2, 3.740 GHz
  42.   - Astra 1D, 10,862 GHz

  45. ARIANE 5 LAUNCH DELAYED AGAIN
  46.   KOUROU, French Guiana (TS) -- The first launch of Europe's new 
  47. Ariane 5 rocket has been delayed again according to reports from 
  48. French Guiana. The new rocket is now not scheduled to take to the 
  49. skies before the end of May following a cancellation of its planned 
  50. May 15th launch date.
  51.   A statement from the European Space Agency reported "As predicted, 
  52. the fluid and electric connections and their tests have gone along 
  53. satisfactorily. However, the placement of protective hooding on the 
  54. launcher has taken longer than planned taking into account security 
  55. and quality control requirements for the launch campaign."
  56.   The Ariane 5 program has been beset with delays and problems, the 
  57. worse of which was an accident in testing of the central cryogenic 
  58. engine that killed two engineers.

  61. JAPAN'S JCSAT-1 LEAKING
  62.   TOKYO, Japan (TS) -- Japan's JCSAT-1 satellite has a fuel leak said 
  63. operators Japan Satellite Systems (JSAT) last week. The leak will lead 
  64. to the satellite, at 150 degrees East, being retired two years earlier 
  65. than planned in August 1997.
  66.   Plans have already been drawn up to move the soon to be launched 
  67. JCSAT-4 satellite into position and replace the faulty craft. The new 
  68. satellite will offer the same services as JCSAT-1 plus add digital 
  69. television signals and coverage of other Asian countries.

  72. NETHOLD BENELUX PACKAGE
  73.   BRUSSELS, Belgium (TS) -- Nethold's digital pay television package 
  74. for the Benelux countries of Netherlands and Belgium will be as 
  75. follows:
  76.   Packet One - Netherlands 1, Netherlands 2, Netherlands 3, SBS 6, 
  77. BRTN 1, RTBF, TELE 21, VTM, VT 4 and other private television 
  78. broadcasters.
  79.   Packet Two - MTV Europe, CMT Europe, Adult Channel, Discovery 
  80. Europe, NBC Super Channel, CNBC Europe, Giga TV, Eurosport, European 
  81. Business News, European Weatherchannel, Weerkanaal and a BBC program 
  82. (either BBC World or BBC Prime).
  83.   Packet Three - FilmNet 1, FilmNet 2, Supersport Nederland, 
  84. Supersport Belgie, Hallmark TV, K-TV Nederland, a dutch culture and 
  85. documentary channel and other programs.
  86.   Plans call for packet one to be free to subscribers of packets two 
  87. or three. What will viewers loose if they switch from cable to the 
  88. digital package? Some of the local VHF and UHF channels from 
  89. neighboring countries, such as those from the UK, France and Germany 
  90. will be lost although more local content will be provided. Local 
  91. broadcasting, such as news, will also be lost so some may prefer to

  95. CANAL PLUS DEMONSTRATES DIGITAL
  96.   PARIS, France (TS) -- Canal Plus last week demonstrated its new 
  97. digital TV package that it plans to launch on April 27th. The new 
  98. service will be Europe's first digital pay television package.
  99.   Canalsatellite will offer ten channels to subscribers with more 
  100. planned for the future as it expands to fill the three transponders it 
  101. has on the Astra satellite, enough room for 24 channels.
  102.   Consumers currently have a choice of Philips or Thomson digital 
  103. satellite receivers to choose from with prices ranging from 4,000 to 
  104. 4,500 French francs. Selected companies are being allowed to rent the 
  105. receivers for 50 francs a month to subscribers.

  108. CCTV SIGNS GLOBAL DEAL WITH PANAMSAT
  109.   BEIJING, China (TS) -- Chinese Central Television (CCTV) will soon 
  110. be available in most regions of the world after a new deal was signed 
  111. by PanAmSat and the national broadcaster of China.
  112.   Announcing the deal, CCTV president Yang Weiguang, said the company 
  113. can now transmit up to six channels worldwide using digital methods 
  114. and even begin broadcasting some English programming.
  115.   CCTV is now available to Europe and Africa with the new service 
  116. beginning on April 1st and new channels planned for later.
  117.   A music channel will launch in July 1st and CCTV's new English 
  118. language channel is planned to debut worldwide on October 1st. 
  119. Advertising will support the services said the broadcaster.

  122. AUSTRALIAN RUGBY ROW CONTINUES
  123.   SYDNEY, Australia (TS) -- Australian pay television operator Optus 
  124. Vision this week filed legal action against a group of companies 
  125. including Rupert Murdoch's News Corp., Telstra Corp. and Foxtel, over 
  126. the pay-TV rights to rugby union games.
  127.   OptusVision was angered when the Australian Rugby Union granted News 
  128. Corporation ten year rights to all games from last summer despite 
  129. having a previous agreement with OptusVision, said the company.
  130.   The Foxtel service competes with Optus in the pay television market. 
  131. News Corp. was recently stopped in court when it attempted to create a 
  132. new Super League in Rugby to out shadow Optus and its Rugby League 
  133. coverage.

  136. RAI TO SPAN THE WORLD
  137.   ROME, Italy (TS) -- Italian state television, RAI, said it had 
  138. contracted with Echostar to expand its RAI International channel 
  139. available in North, Central and South America. The service will soon 
  140. begin broadcasting 24 hours a day and coverage of other regions of the 
  141. world is planned for this year.

  144. NEW RUSSIAN LAUNCH PAD READIES
  145.   MOSCOW, Russia (TS) -- Russia's official news agency, ITAR-TASS, 
  146. says it has learnt a new Russian launch facility will begin operations 
  147. later this year. In a dispatch from Moscow, the agency said "The new 
  148. Russian cosmodrome Svobodny, Amur Region in the Russian Far East, will 
  149. make its first launching next September, Itar-Tass learnt at the press 
  150. centre of the Russian Space Forces. A more precise date has not been 
  151. fixed yet."
  152.   The report said a new Russian light rocket called START would be 
  153. launched from the facility and it would place an American satellite in 
  154. orbit.
  155.   The Svobodny site is an old cruise missile launch facility.

  158. BBC WORLD JOINS PAS-2
  159.   GREENWICH, Connecticut, USA (TS) -- PanAmSat has announced that BBC 
  160. World has joined the international programmer lineup on its PAS-2 
  161. Pacific Ocean Region satellite.
  162.   The new relay extends the network's reach throughout the 
  163. Asia-Pacific and complements BBC World's existing service in South 
  164. Asia over the PAS-4 Indian Ocean Region satellite.
  165.   BBC World will be transmitted from PanAmSat's teleport in Sylmar, 
  166. California, over the PAS-2 C-band Pacific Rim beam for reception 
  167. throughout the Asia-Pacific.
  168.   The Panamsat PAS-2 programming line up now includes ABS-CBN 
  169. (Philippines), Asia Business News, Bloomberg Information Television, 
  170. CBS, Channel KTV, China Central Television (CCTV), Country Music 
  171. Television, Chinese Television Network, Disney, Discovery, ESPN, 
  172. Liberty, NBC, NHK TV Japan, Television Broadcasting International 
  173. (Hong Kong), Television Corporation of Singapore, Turner Broadcasting 
  174. and Viacom International.

  177. ABOUT THE INTERNET, ON THE INTERNET
  178.   MUNICH, Germany (TS) -- "Life on the Internet" is a 13-part series 
  179. about, guess what, life on the Internet. It will be broadcast by the 
  180. US Public Broadcasting Service, but not only on TV. Each of the 
  181. half-hour programs will be available on the Internet, ready to view 
  182. with VDOnet's video player. In addition to that, transcripts will be 
  183. available as well as collections of links mentioned in the programs. 
  184. The series which explores "the phenomenon of the Internet and the 
  185. millions of people who use it every day" starts on April 6.

  191. - The cable and multichannel TV market is to experience large growth 
  192. according to a report, Latin America Cable and Satellite Markets: 
  193. 1996. The study is quoted as saying "immense opportunities for cable 
  194. and satellite industries in the coming decade." (Sky Report)
  195. - The US military will stop broadcasting intentional offsets in global 
  196. positioning system (GPS) signals over the next decade as commercial 
  197. uses of the system now far outnumber the military applications. "The 
  198. same technology that helped our troops succeed in Desert Storm will 
  199. bring us safer air travel throughout the world, improved 
  200. transportation on our roads and highways and faster response to 
  201. emergencies by rescue vehicles. And, it will help America's industries 
  202. lead the world," said President Clinton announcing the news. (AFNS)

  206. - The planned Dutch sports channel has a new name: Sport 7. The 
  207. channel is scheduled to begin broadcasting from 1600 on weekdays and 
  208. 1100 on weekends with close down scheduled for around 0130 each night.

  210. - Libyan Television is running a trailer on Eutelsat II-F3. Soon 
  211. satellite viewers across Europe and northern Africa will be able to 
  212. enjoy the best Libya has to offer of 11.080 GHz H. The test broadcasts

  214. - Finland's PTV4 will begin broadcasting via satellite. From June 1st 
  215. it will be part of the new Nethold digital TV package on Astra. Some 
  216. readers may remember the channel broadcast tests on Intelsat at 1
